To lure guests during their slow season, most of the major U.S. hotel chains are offering special rates or discounts starting in late November and stretching into early 1999. Deals can knock 10 to 40 percent off your stay or reward you with a free night for every paid night you spend. Here's a sampling of what the big chains have to offer. Apple Core Holiday Inn Marriott Hilton Hyatt Renaissance Apple Core Hotels: Sure, it's not exactly a huge chain, but this deal is too good to skip. These four boutique hotels in midtown Manhattan are offering a holiday rate starting at $89 per night from 13 December 1998 through 28 February 1999 (excluding New Year's Eve weekend, which has already sold out). The $89 rate applies to standard double-occupancy rooms and does not include tax. Call 1 (800) 567-7720 for reservations. Hilton: For anyone with a Discover Card, the Hilton for the Holidays offer has some real bargains at more than 60 Hiltons nationwide. Dates and rates vary by property. A room at the Chicago Hilton and Towers, for example, is only $99 per night, down from $159. Several warm-weather destinations, including Honolulu and Orlando, are also on sale. A complete list is available on the Hilton Web site. For reservations, call 1 (800) 445-8667 and ask for the HY plan code. Rooms must be paid for with a Discover Card. Holiday Inn: This season, Holiday Inn has a second-night free promotion from now through February 1999 that gives guests a free night for every night they pay for. Guests may stay a maximum of 10 nights (5 free). To obtain the free coupon required for the deal, check national magazines and your local paper or call 1 (800) 277-4445. There is no limit on the number of coupons you use during this promotion. Hyatt: From 18 December 1998 through 2 January 1999, the Hyatt Holiday Sale features nightly rates as low as $49 at the Regency Suites in Atlanta and $69 at the Hilton Head Resort in South Carolina. Blackout dates vary by property, but all hotels are exempt from the rate on New Year's Eve. For more information or reservations, call 1 (800) 233-1234. Marriott: More than 250 of the 300 Residence Inn by Marriott hotels in the United States have discounted holiday rates to as little as $59�79 per night for a studio or one-bedroom suite. Rates apply on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights as well as during the weeks of Christmas and New Year's. Call 1 (800) 331-3131 to make reservations (required). Similar rates are available at nearly 200 participating Marriott hotels and resorts now through 10 January 1999. For example, a room at San Diego's Marriott La Jolla is $79 a night while a night in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook is $69. Discount rates do not apply to groups of five or more rooms and blackout dates vary depending on the location. Call 1 (800) 872-9563 and ask for the Holiday Rate. Renaissance: From now until 14 February 1999, 31 Renaissance hotels and resorts are offering the Renaissance Rendezvous price that reduces regular nightly rates by as much as 40 percent. The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., is $105 per night, and the Cottonwoods Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, is $150. Blackout dates vary by property, and some rates are available seven days a week while others are for weekends only.
